As a child, Christmas always brought a longing for that one perfect gift that would make me happy. If I could just get that new bike, the one with the banana seat and shifter on the top tube, I would be happy and satisfied!
Now that I am older, my thoughts turn towards a deeper longing. As an introvert, I find myself thinking that if I was just more of a people person or if I was just more comfortable in my own skin, then I would be truly happy and have a better life. Today’s passage speaks to just this type of thought when Peter states, “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life!”(v. 3). Peter goes on to say that “he has given us his very great and precious promises” that lead to a complete life in Him. What wonderful news and how appropriate a message for this Advent season. God has given and is still giving us the perfect gift in His divine power. Imagine the power of the God of the universe at work in us. We may think that we are not adequate, but God has given all we need to live up to His calling.
In a season where we so often fret about finding that perfect gift or worry about what we need to have a better life, we can just slow down and recognize the great and perfect gift our Father has already given us. In His Son He has given us the perfect example of how we should live and in His divine power he has given us what we need to live according to this example. We tend to dwell on our inadequacies as if they can’t change. Instead, we can focus on the promises of God and receive His priceless gift. His love is without bounds and the immensity of His provision is hard to imagine!
For reflection:
- How would recognizing that in him we have everything we need for a godly life change the way you think about your life and circumstances?
