DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- Share a time when someone was generous to you.
- This week, we continue our sermon series, “The Pursuit of God,” by examining the generosity of King David in providing precious materials for the construction of the temple of God, as recorded in 1 Chronicles 28 and 29. Begin your study in prayer, asking God to speak to you through the Scripture, and then read that passage aloud.
- Background: David was told that he would not build the temple of God (2 Samuel 7). Instead, God would build a house for David that would last forever. David then decided to provide his son Solomon with materials and plans for the Lord’s temple.
- King David states in 1 Chronicles 29:14 that everything comes from God, and we give out of what the Lord gave us. How should this affect us when we are asked to give to God and others?
- Read 1 Chronicles 29:12. Where does wealth come from, according to this verse? Also read Deuteronomy 8:17-18. How should this affect the way you go about your life, trying to make money and build wealth, and God’s part in it?
- Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-13. What does this praise of God section by King David tell you about God (His attributes and character)? What does it tell you about King David?
- King David asked the whole congregation to praise God in 1 Chronicles 29:20. What forms or methods of praise and worship did the congregations use?
- Why is it a great thing to praise God? Read these Psalm verses written by King David that talk about why we should praise God. Psalm 103:1-4, Psalm 145:1-5.
- Read 1 Chronicles 29:2-5. King David gave generously towards building the temple. What kinds of things did he give to the work of the Lord?
- King David gave and then asked the leaders of the people to give in 1 Chronicles 29:6-8. How did they respond?
- God produced in King David and in the people a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). What is that fruit? Thank God for giving us Joy when we give to him and to others.
- What is one thing you sense God speaking to you personally through this week’s study? In small groups, discuss this together and then pray about what you shared. If you are on your own, write it down, pray about it, and consider sharing your thoughts with someone this week.
