Joy Whispered Through Tears

Read Psalm 47

When I saw today’s scripture passage I thought to myself, this will be hard to do. I am a joyful person but I can also be a pessimistic person at times.

Psalm 47 is a bold celebration: “Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy!” Sometimes joy feels like a distant memory. Life doesn’t always give us reasons to clap. The world feels broken, and God’s promises seem delayed. We read about His reign, but we see corruption. We hear of His victories, but we feel defeated.

Verse 3 says, “He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet.” Yet we live in a time when injustice thrives and the faithful are overlooked. It’s hard to reconcile this triumphant language with the weight of our daily struggles. If God is King, why does it feel like chaos rules?

Even the call to worship in verse 6,“Sing praises to God, sing praises!”, can feel hollow. Singing praises when your heart is heavy feels like pretending. And maybe that’s the hardest part: showing up in faith when everything in you wants to walk away.

But Psalm 47 doesn’t ignore reality, it challenges it. It dares us to declare God’s sovereignty even when we don’t feel it. It invites us to trust that His throne is not empty, even when His silence is deafening.

Verse 8 reminds us: “God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.” That’s not a feeling, it’s a fact. And sometimes, faith means holding onto truth when emotions scream otherwise.

So if you’re weary, skeptical, or just numb—this psalm is still for you. Not because you feel joyful, but because God is still worthy. Praise isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s whispered through tears. But it still counts.

For Reflection:
  • When is it hardest for you to “feel joyful”?  How can you still express praise and worship in those moments?

* Move each of the Magi figures and the figures of Mary, Joseph, and the donkey a little closer to the stable. This long journey to Bethlehem was not easy for Joseph and Mary, but they were filled with JOY because they trusted that God’s plan was for good. God was keeping His promise to send a Rescuer!
