The Great Commission Prelude

The Great Commission Prelude

Guest preacher Pastor Dave Choi brings a standalone message on the great commission out of Matthew 28.
(Matthew 28:16-17)

Sermon Outline

“Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.” (Matthew 28:16-17)

The faithful disciple is one who regularly hears and trusts the word of God (Matthew 28:16)

  • One cannot be a true disciple without regularly hearing from God’s word.
  • Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. (Romans 10:17)
  • “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise.” (Psalm 56:3-4a)

The faithful disciple is one who obeys the word of God (Matthew 28:16)

  • “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46)
  • “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22)
  • “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” (Luke 11:28)

The faithful disciple is one who sees Jesus, and worships Jesus (Matthew 28:17)

  • And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. (Luke 24:27)
  • Story of my mom

Jesus is the faithful disciple, who did what we could not, so that we can do what we cannot (Matthew 28:17)

  • “Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.” (Hebrews 5:8-9)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Describe someone in your life who has modeled faithful discipleship. What qualities stood out to you?
  2. Begin your study with prayer, asking God to speak to you. Then read Matthew 28:16-17 aloud.
  3. As you read this passage, which aspect of discipleship—hearing, trusting, obeying, seeing, or worshiping—do you sense God calling you to grow in?
  4. Reflect on the missing disciple, Judas. How did his life miss key aspects of true discipleship?
  5. Share a time when you delighted in hearing God’s Word. What practices help you hear from Scripture more deeply?
  6. We often study Scripture but forget the importance of Spirit-dependent obedience. Share a time when obedience led to a divine or unexpected result.
  7. How often does your time in God’s Word lead to trust, seeing Jesus, and worship? Share a recent example.
  8. Matthew tells us that “some doubted.” How does that phrase encourage you in your own walk with God?
  9. What is one thing God is personally speaking to you through this passage? Share it with your group and pray together—or, if studying alone, write it down and pray over it.

DIG DEEPER

Exploring Faith

  • There are times during the resurrection narrative, when doubt is exposed. Share a time in your life when you doubted some aspect of God’s character. How did God bring you to a place of trust?

Growing in Faith

  • Write out Matthew 28:16-17. Meditate and reflect on each step of being a faithful disciple.
  • Consider the way you read the Scriptures. What might change if you always read Scripture with a view to obedience, trust, drawing closer to Jesus, and worshiping Him?

Centered in Faith

  • What is one practical change you want to make in the way you spend time in the word of God? Perhaps you can spend a few minutes extra each day this week as you seek to be a faithful disciple by hearing, trusting, obeying, seeing Jesus, and worshiping the living Word.
  • Spend some time reading Luke 24:13-35. As you read through the passage, consider how the story of the Passover, the miracle at the Red Sea, the wilderness, and the crossing of the Jordan River to the promised Land point to Jesus. Does this cause you to see more of Jesus? Would you spend some time worshiping Jesus with a song?
