  1. What is the first story or image that comes to mind when you hear that Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords?
  2. Describe your relationship with authority figures in your life. Share a positive memory and/or a negative memory of an experience you had with a leader.
  3. Have you ever experienced shame or fear motivation, and how did you respond?
  4. Based on your experiences in life and what God has taught you so far, what kind of King do you need?
  5. Read Matthew 20:17-28. What does this say about the earthly authority structures in society, and how is Jesus’ Lordship different?
  6. Read Romans 3:21-26. When Jesus acted in His death and resurrection, what was He freeing humanity from, and what was He bringing humanity into? How is this gift received?
  7. Read Romans 8:14-17. What is an area of life in which you have struggled with fear or felt anxiety? How does Jesus’ victory over death and sin address your fear?
  8. Share a time when you had an encounter with the Lord and experienced the joy of His presence. If no memories come to mind, what would you ask for the Lord to tell you or show you and why?
  9. What effect does hope for justice and peace with God forever have on the struggles and trials of daily life?
  10. Is Jesus your Lord, and why or why not?
  11. Reflecting on the contrast between fear or shame motivation and the love of our King, why should we obey Jesus?
  12. How will you leverage the position of influence God has given you to resemble the selfless, loving service of the Lord Jesus Christ?
