In Colossians 2:6-15, Paul builds upon the centrality of Christ with a call toward spiritual growth individually and corporately. This is rooted in the gospel and contrasts with our own abilities and any sort of false spirituality built upon human activity.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- What is the best advice that you have never forgotten?
- As we carry forward with our series from Colossians, “Jesus at the Center,” we are looking at Colossians 2:6-15. Whether you are on your own or with a small group, begin your study in prayer, asking God to speak to you through His word, and then read that portion aloud.
- In verse 6 and 7, Paul shifts his focus to providing wisdom on practically living as a person of faith in Colossae. The first illustration Paul gives is that of roots. What come to your mind when you think of a root system of trees? What are benefits of roots? What are the dangers of being a tree without strong roots?
- Paul’s advice is to be and remain rooted in Christ Jesus. What does it mean for you, your group, and God’s people to be rooted in Christ Jesus?
- Why is it important for us to be rooted as Paul advised? (Think about the challenges we experience in life. Do we get to determine when the storms of life appear?)
- In verse 8, Paul addresses a problem that he has been informed about in Colossae. What appears to be going on in this verse?
- How do we at times focus on our own traditions and elevate their importance to unhealthy places? What are some ways as individuals and corporately (Eastbrook Church) for us to remain rooted in Christ Jesus?
- The word ‘mystery’ appears three times in this passage (1:26, 27; 2:2). What is this mystery, according to these three references?
- In verses 10-15, Paul reminds the people of Colossae who Christ is and what He did. What stands out to about these promises of being rooted to Christ Jesus?
- How are we similar in our need to be reminded of the accomplishments and promises of Jesus?
- What is one significant thing that God is speaking to you through this study? If you are on your own, you may want to write it down, pray about it, and then share it with someone later. If you are with a small group, share these things with one another and then pray for one another about these things.
