This past weekend at Eastbrook Church, we concluded our annual MissionsFest. As we celebrate God’s faithfulness to us as a church for forty years, we heard from two of our long-term, international ministry partners on the theme of “Hard Places.”
This second weekend, Rev. Canon Francis Omondi from Kenya spoke to us about the nature of life in the kingdom, beginning from the Sinai Covenant and the Exodus through the exile to Jesus and toward Revelation.
SERMON OUTLINE
Isaiah 61 was spoken the Israelites while still in exile. It spoke to them of the coming Savior, the anointed one who brings good news!
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- Why were the people of Israel exiled from the promised land?
- Read Isaiah 1, 58. In what ways did the message of Isaiah 61 encourage the first listeners, the exiled community? How did this speak to their condition?
- In the Gospels Christ claims to fulfill this prophesy of Isaiah 61. How does Christ fulfill this prophesy? (Read Luke 4:16-30, Matthew 5, 1:1-7)
- In Christ’s commission to His disciples and His church, He is emphatic that we teach believers to observe all that He has commanded (Matthew 28:18-20). How can we understand and apply the great commission’s instruction in the light of Isaiah 61:1-4?
